A new solid-state laboratory was built in 1976 with a $5.25 million from the Fairchild Foundation. This laboratory took the name of “Sherman Fairchild Laboratory.” The Sherman Fairchild laboratory became one of the three laboratories in the Sherman Fairchild Center for the Physical Sciences. Lewis lab, as well as the connecting auditorium and hallways of Lewis lab, are also considered a part of this complex.
1976
Lehigh's Physics Laboratory caught fire on April 6, 1900, damaging much of the building. The Laboratory was rebuilt very quickly, and took the name "Lewis Lab" upon completion in honor of Lehigh's 10th president. It is believed that the fire was due to curtains catching fire near an optics experiment.
Lehigh's Physics Laboratory was constructed in 1892.
